((This is just something I got the random muse for, talking about one of Vespera’s random days… I’ve notice that I never finish anything I start writing >.< I’ll try to finish this one.))
Vespera was unable to tell formally whether her life fell into a well deserved ritual or into a deep and inescapable rut. Both scenarios were similar, the only differences that rung up in her mind were where her path diverged in her life and what her end emotions were. And her emotions were, as they always were in her life, far too difficult to make heads or tails out of. It was so much easier to drift through life and fake the emotions that seemed appropriate than to reveal what the hell she was really feeling-which was a detail that she failed to get herself.
--Good Morning--
In spite of the events surrounding her that suggested that she should do otherwise, Vespera was curled up in her queen sized bed and baby blue comforter, sleeping long past the sun’s rising and intrusion into her bedroom in its attempts to do away with the darkness that gratefully kept her wrapped up in her dream world. Use to the habits established long before the side effects of Vespera’s mood pills came along, Cutie was already awake, wagging his tail hopefully while staring at the woman he was lying near, thinking that soon she would rise so she could begin their morning routine. However she remained where she was, only moving just a tad so she could pull her fluffy comforter over her eyes. The dog gave a bark which was met by a groan of protest by his owner.
“Go back to sleep for a while Cutie.” The woman’s instructions were given with a soft and drowsy tone, a plea that failed to register with her companion. The sheep dog barked once again, but the tone of it change significantly. It became more defensive, and a growl quickly followed behind it. “Cutie--”
The blanket hiding her from the world was snatched from her body, thrown to the side and allowed to pile up on the woman’s precious dog. “Silly chipmunk.” Vespera’s eyes pinched shut further, curling into a tighter ball to regain the warmth that was taken from her in such a cruel fashion. As though the person knew what they did was wrong towards her, a soft kiss was placed on her forehead. “What are you doing sleeping in so late, huh? Don’t you think you should be getting to work?” The male voice was caring and amused, a trait that Vespera could pin to just one voice. Her eyes opened slowly, staring back into a pair of bright silver orbs.
“Norio. You know, you look like Toshiyuki everyday.” Vespera was almost tempted to sleepily exclaim ‘big brother’ at the top of her lungs and muster up the strength to throw herself into the male’s arms, but it didn’t take her long to realize that it just couldn’t be him. Norio laughed, pushing his sister’s hair in a random direction out of her face.
“You and mom say that all the time. I’m beginning to worry that you two are grooming me to be his replacement.” The male brushed his fingers against her cheek lazily. “You know, the other day she actually suggested that I transfer to the 11th division.”
“You wouldn’t last 20 minutes.” His older sister proclaimed, sticking out her tongue. “You’re the biggest softie I know.”
“If I make it 5, I’ll surprise myself. The idea of 20 sounds like a lifetime, one of which will involve mass amounts of pain, scars and trauma.” Vespera’s eyes began to gain back focus lost in her dozing state, adjusting onto her brother’s appearance. Over the standard shinigami robes was a long worn white apron with the words ‘please refrain from kissing me’ going across it in obvious handwritten calligraphy, making it all the more amusing to the captain.
“How long have you been here and what have you been doing in my apartment?” Vespera finally inquired while lifting her hand to rub her eye carefully. “Don’t even tell me how you got in, I’m afraid to know.” Norio grabbed Vespera’s hands, urging her to get onto her feet and up out of her comfortable bed and into the real world.
“I just wanted to surprise my big sister with a nice evening by giving her a clean house and a warm dinner to return to, but you sort of ruined my plans by sleeping in.” Norio proclaimed, watching his sister slowly stand up. “So, I’ve got a semi-clean home and your favorite breakfast--”
“Fried pickles, chocolate chip waffles, and a cheese omelet.” As the list was read off, the male nodded to every bullet, making the woman smile madly. “You are the best little brother in the entire world. I take back what I said when you were younger, I wouldn’t trade you for a new watch and a medicine bag.”
Soon her hands were full with her robe and some towels. “That’s all the thanks I need. I was worrying for months about it. Now, go take a shower in your clean bathroom, and by the time you get done, your breakfast will be sitting on the table.” Norio pushed her through the halls and to the door of the bathroom, shooing her in a fashion similar to their mother’s. Vespera was thankful for her brother’s thoughtful gesture, but the reason behind it was beginning to worry her.
“Wait--why are you doing this?” She just had to ask, the woman couldn’t just let it go without attempting to get an answer. “Please don’t tell me… are you sensing something? Is something wrong?”
The woman wasn’t the only one with something of a heightened sense of emotions and impending trouble, it ran in her whole family, biological or adopted. It made it harder to hide things from one another, and it was far harder to find that the horrible sense sending chills down their spine was due to a family member’s presence.
But Norio shook his head, smiling his sister to calm her nerves. “Nothing is wrong. I’m doing this out of the kindness of my little brother heart. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth--that’s not a phrase I should be using. Go shower woman.”
Vespera remained still for a moment, to decide whether or not if her brother was lying to her by waiting for her own sense of dread to come about, but it remained quiet in her. So she pushed into the bathroom, notably tidy upon the first glance. I love Norio. The woman couldn’t imagine what she would do without the caring family members in her life--
She stopped where she was, dropping the collection of items in her grasp. Vespera didn’t realize that she let the items go. All she could notice was what was hanging above her sink.
The mirror. It wasn’t smudge like she had it, rubbed down with grease and goo and whatever she could get her hands on to make it dirty and damn near impossible to see any defining characteristic of her face. It was wiped to a shining clean and allowed Vespera to see something she did her best to avoid seeing everyday of her life: the image that reflected back at her.
She didn’t recognize the face in the mirror. Vespera stepped closer to it with eyes wide in shock. They only got wider when the reflection did the same, making her stop as well. For a moment, all he did was stare back at the figure that was staring at her. Slowly she lifted her hand, placing it against sink to keep her balance.
Who is that? It was a mirror, logically, it was her. But every time she was forced to gaze into one, it was a different woman. And each one was out to piss her off by ruthlessly mocking her and refusing to speak their own words and reveal their identity. They succeeded in upsetting her every time, even when they didn’t say a word.
It was one of those times where there was nothing but silence. Vespera refused to open her mouth, glaring at the soul on the other side who did just the same. It was just enough to make her snap. Closing her eyes, she picked up the first thing that could be lifted off the sink and slammed it into the mirror with a furious shout. Each time the object collided with the surface, she let out the scream that got louder and louder, covering up the sounds of the shattering. She held her face down to shield herself from the flying shard, but blood was pouring from her hand, dripping off her wrists and staining the white sink.
Unknown to Vespera, her war like shouting was becoming almost irrational, and in the echoing space it more than easily caught by Norio. “Vespera? Vespera!!” His calls were lost on his sister, still beating and shouting even though the mirror was long gone. She felt her body being pulled away when Norio grabbed her in an attempt to get her away from the sink. “Vespera, what’s wrong? Calm down woman!”
The woman flailed about in his arms for some time, but when her eyes opened to see the mirror that no longer existed, her body slumped. Norio looked at her in utter confusion, still holding onto her in case she decided to have another--episode. “Was the mirror not clean enough?”
“I’m fine Norio.” Vespera pulled away from his grasp, pushing her wild hair back with her clean hand so she could the dumbfounded look in her taller brother’s silver eyes. “What?”
“You were just screaming like someone attacked you and killed your mirror, what do you mean what!?” Vespera shook her head, looking at her bloody hand. “Let me look at that.”
Norio cleaned Vespera’s wounded hand and cleared the bathroom of the reflective shards so his sister could safely get ready for work. Her behavior was irrational to him, but Vespera seemed keen on avoiding any talks about it over her breakfast. With a thank you to his loving brotherly gestured, the captain made her way to her office so she could get the late start to her work day.
